"This is an impressive performance by the new entrant, especially as its score of 8.32 out of 10 is significantly better than its much larger rivals. Waterstones manages a score of only 5.08, Borders is a little behind with 4.78, and delivering very weak scores are Amazon with 1.86 and WH Smith with 1.78.
The comprehensive list of sites, which includes not only the largest players but also some of the smaller specialist online merchants, has been created by The Retail Bulletin and specialist website testing company Sitemorse (in conjunction with Interwoven) that used its automated testing of the first 125 pages of each retailer’s site to generate a ranked table. ...
Shaw says Sitemorse uses recognised tests and standards and if The Book Depository can achieve high marks at its first attempt then larger operators should have few problems. He singles out Amazon as being especially disappointing as it is seen as the “gold standard” but when its website is examined more closely then Shaw says you find there are bad links and poor accessibility for visually impaired people."
